COURSE DESCRIPTION

Medical coding is an integral part of the health care process. While it is generally associated with billing and reimbursement, the coding process also provides data that is used for determining the prevalence and incidence of a condition as wells as research and other epidemiology initiatives. 

TARGET AUDIENCE

This independent self-study activity is designed for nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the educational activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify the various code sets used in medical coding
  • Discuss the association between medical documentation and medical coding
  • Review coding procedures using the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10)

METHOD OF PARTICIPATION

In order to receive credit, participants should read the entire monograph, complete and submit an evaluation and score at least 70% on the self-assessment test.
