It is important to be current on the issue of human trafficking to identify victims accurately and promptly. Comprehensive trauma informed care with the effective use of screening tools will enable evidence-based quality care to victims. A trusting relationship between the victim and health care provider is essential to meet the health needs of the victim.  Applying Porges Polyvagal Theory assists in establishing safety.

Upon completion of the educational activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Apply Polyvagal theory of safety to a clinical encounter.
  • Perform screening tools and comprehensive examinations, make referrals and provide resources to victims.
  • Describe hidden and invisible “at risk” exploited victims.
  • Identify areas in need of research and development in the field of human trafficking.
