Daniel Menkes, MD, MHSA Professor and Chair of Neurology
A. Personal Statement
I have had an extensive career as a neuroimmunologist who has conducted research on inflammatory and immune mediated diseases affecting the nervous system. I previously obtained competitive funding through the NIH and the American Academy of Neurology for these projects while building a robust clinical practice and managing administrative and teaching responsibilities. As the Founding Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, I was instrumental in forging a Neuroscience Center of Excellence in which there is collaboration among neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and pediatric neurology. I am enthusiastic about the work of Drs. Graham, Green and Cunningham and look forward to helping to advance their research. I possess the requisite background, clinical expertise and managerial skills necessary to support this multidisciplinary project with the needed clinical expertise.

D. Additional Information: Research Support and/or Scholastic Performance
I would be interested in this program because I want to refocus my career on peripheral nerve research. My spouse has been successful in receiving NIH grants for diabetes research. The next logical step would be to collaborate on mechanisms designed to reduce the probability of developing diabetic neuropathy and its complications. This degree would give value added benefit to NIH grant applications.
