ForwardWest Texas HIV Care Summit
The West Texas HIV Care Summit is an interdisciplinary continuing education program designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals and community partners involved in HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and support services across West Texas. The program addresses current HIV trends in the region and practical strategies for improving prevention, early identification, linkage to care, and long-term health outcomes.
Sessions will examine HIV and STI screening and prevention, implementation of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in community settings, barriers to stigma-free HIV care in rural communities, the evolving clinical needs of people aging with HIV, development of effective healthcare and community partnerships, and psychiatric intervention following an HIV diagnosis. The program incorporates clinical, public health, behavioral health, and community perspectives to support coordinated, patient-centered HIV care across diverse practice settings.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for an audience of physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, clinic administrators, patients and other healthcare professionals.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe current HIV trends, epidemiologic patterns, and opportunities for improving HIV prevention and care in West Texas.
- Identify evidence-informed approaches to HIV and STI screening, prevention, and early identification of individuals who may benefit from HIV prevention or treatment services.
- Explain the role of PrEP in HIV prevention and discuss strategies for incorporating PrEP into community-based and clinical care settings.
- Recognize barriers that may interfere with access to stigma-free HIV services in rural communities and identify approaches that support respectful, accessible, patient-centered care.
- Discuss clinical and supportive-care considerations associated with an aging population of people living with HIV.
- Identify strategies for developing effective partnerships among healthcare providers, community-based organizations, public health agencies, and other service organizations to strengthen linkage, coordination, and continuity of HIV care.
- Recognize behavioral and psychiatric concerns that may emerge following an HIV diagnosis and describe appropriate strategies for assessment, intervention, and referral.
