ForwardHopCo/Indiana Orthopedic Institute: Anesthesia, Evaluation & Management, and Orthopaedic Coding Intensive
Coding rarely fails at the obvious places — it fails in the gaps between the arthroscopy and the open procedure performed through the same portal, between the pre-admission workup and the anesthesia record, between the office visit and the global period that swallowed it. This half-day intensive follows the surgical patient from the first consultation through the operative suite and back to the post-op visit, connecting coding decisions that are usually taught in isolation. Across five focused sessions, participants work through upper and lower extremity procedures, sports medicine arthroscopy, fracture care, foot and ankle services, ASA guidance on documentation for anesthesia services, along with coding guidance, modifiers used in anesthesia, physical status, and lines and pain blocks, total joint arthroplasty, and evaluation and management, each rule paired with the documentation that either supports it or doesn't, using operative note excerpts, NCCI edit scenarios, and real-world denial patterns. Participants leave with defensible reasoning rather than memorized code pairs.

Learning Objectives
- Apply coding logic to upper and lower extremity procedures, differentiating arthroscopic from open approaches
- Analyze multi-scenario arthroplasty cases, components, and updated guidance on revision procedures
- Identify resources and documentation needed to code anesthesia services
- Identify the necessary information needed to code anesthesia services
- Identify ASA documentation requirements that anesthesia coders and practitioners need to know
- Classify correct reporting for anesthesia procedures, including pre-anesthesia testing
- Evaluate evaluation and management documentation by applying MDM in the surgical specialty context, and defending the level reported
