Orthopedic Showcase: Exploring Musculoskeletal Insights, Part II is a live continuing education activity designed to provide clinicians with practical, evidence-based updates in the evaluation and management of common musculoskeletal conditions. Faculty from the University of Colorado Department of Orthopedics will review hip and knee arthritis, common foot and ankle conditions, and the scope of non-operative sports medicine. The program will emphasize diagnosis, conservative and surgical treatment considerations, interdisciplinary care, and appropriate referral pathways. A case-based panel discussion and audience Q&A will allow participants to apply key concepts to clinical practice and improve musculoskeletal decision-making.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals who evaluate, diagnose, manage, or refer patients with musculoskeletal conditions, including hip and knee arthritis, foot and ankle conditions, and sports medicine injuries.
Learning Objectives
- Diagnose common hip and knee arthritis presentations and identify appropriate non-operative and surgical treatment pathways.
- Differentiate common foot and ankle conditions that may be managed conservatively from those requiring orthopedic referral or surgical evaluation.
- Describe evidence-based non-operative sports medicine treatment options, including rehabilitation, injections, biologics, and return-to-play considerations.
- Apply case-based musculoskeletal decision-making strategies to improve diagnosis, treatment planning, and referral coordination across orthopedic subspecialties.

Session 3: Rethinking Thumb Arthritis in the US: No Cast, No Therapy, No Sidelines
Speaker: Dr. Matthew Belton
Objectives:
- Recognize and stage trapeziometacarpal arthritis in the primary care setting using targeted history, the grind and traction-shift maneuvers, and appropriate radiographic views, and distinguish it from the conditions it is commonly mistaken for, including de Quervain tenosynovitis and radiocarpal arthritis.
- Compare the available surgical options for basal joint arthritis, contrasting trapeziectomy with LRTI against total joint arthroplasty with the dual-mobility Touch implant prosthesis, with attention to recovery timeline, immobilization requirements, and expected return to work and activity.
- Describe the current regulatory and evidence base for the Touch prosthesis, including FDA premarket approval P240020, published European outcomes data, and early US institutional results, and articulate what remains unknown regarding long-term implant survivorship.
- Identify appropriate candidates and referral timing, including which patients are best served by conservative management, which anatomic and staging factors influence implant candidacy, and how to counsel patients on insurance coverage barriers they may encounter.
